Perched upon the Lepini Mountains, Sermoneta preserves the enchanting allure of one of Lazio’s most evocative medieval towns. Its origins trace back to the ancient Roman settlement of Sulmo, mentioned by Virgil and lost in the 1st century AD. During the Middle Ages, the town became a fief of the Annibaldi, who constructed the defensive walls and the Maschio Tower — later remodelled by the Caetani after its acquisition by Boniface VIII in 1297.
Under this powerful family, Sermoneta was transformed into an elegant Renaissance residence, flourishing as a centre of economic and cultural significance. Time seems to stand still when walking among its stone alleyways, workshops, and loggias. Every step echoes the legacy of artists and patrons like Girolamo Siciolante, known as ‘il Sermoneta,’ and choreographer Fabrizio Caroso, whose creations carried the town’s renown across the courts of Europe Today, the historic centre is an open-air museum, where every corner tells a story of centuries of art, power, and human endeavour.
