This space was intended for the armed garrison responsible for guarding the castle and protecting the Caetani family, particularly during periods marked by political tension and territorial conflicts. During the Renaissance, while retaining its military function, the Sala dei Gendarmi was enhanced with understated decorative elements, such as painted or carved coats of arms, emphasising the authority of the Caetani. The room was a hub of activity: guard rotations were organised here, defensive strategies planned, and the finest weapons stored. Monumental fireplaces provided essential heating during the harsh winter months, while drapes and tapestries helped to insulate the space and add a touch of decorum.
