The paved road leads up to Porta Maggiore and continues beyond, winding into the heart of the ancient city. Paved with large limestone blocks and flanked by raised sidewalks on both sides, the road today appears uneven and worn. The deep ruts carved into its surface — especially along the central stretch — testify to centuries of heavy traffic, where carts travelled back and forth for centuries.
