The Maschietto Tower, or counter-tower, is a smaller defensive structure attached to the southern side of the Maschio Tower. Built using the same construction technique, it was erected after the Maschio Tower and, although smaller, served both as a residence and as a lookout and control point. It was connected to the Maschio Tower by internal drawbridges, which ensured protection and isolation in the event of attack. In the early 20th century, Gelasio Caetani used the Maschietto Tower as a studio during restoration works of the castle, preserving its residential and strategic function. From its summit, visitors can enjoy aerial views of the village and surrounding fortifications. This vantage point reveals how the towers formed part of a highly integrated and impregnable defensive system, a testament to the Caetani’s military and architectural skill.
